For the three Sunshine Coast canoes this journey began in January, and for some even earlier than that. That's when the selection process, planning and training started. Preparing for the worst in terms of weather and paddling conditions, our crews approached the journey with eager anticipation. Though we knew the proposed route and schedule, we knew it would likely change quickly and often. And so it did.
To the credit of the great collection of people, the three Sunshine Coast crews and their ground crews faced it all with smiles, resignation, positive energy and a cooperative spirit.
Our five hour wait on Benson Island and our equally long wait at Nettles Island only provided valuable time for reflection and the cultivating of new friendships. So too, the cancellation of the final two days of paddling up Port Alberni Inlet was met with understanding and a sense of trust.
As the leader of the Sunshine Coast crew I can honestly say that I was not only proud of our crew - I learned from you and your exemplary attitude. Likewise, as you take your canoe on your own personal life's journey, I hope you too will benefit from the lessons learned and what we accomplished on this beautiful journey.
It unfolded exactly as it was supposed to - and you did so well.
Ed Hill, Skipper
Traveling from Tofino to Ahousaht to Port Alberni from June 30th to July 8th.
